What to wear for interviews…
It sounds like an obvious question – surely you should just know what to wear and that it is the least of your concerns when going to an interview, but you would be surprised how many times we actually get asked this.
And it is a very valid and important question – first impressions count and all that!! Surely you should be judged on ability and how you answer the interviewer shouldn’t you? But humans are humans and companies will judge you instantly on what you look like and if they feel you will fit in.
The answer we give to candidates if they ask (or even if they don’t!) is different each time as it really does depend on the role you are going for. This week alone we have had a photographer going for a 1 day trial shoot with interview beforehand and another candidate going for a senior position Client side. Very different roles and very different dress requirements, so we would always tailor (sorry couldn’t resist!!) our exact answer to each candidate. However…
Don’t get me wrong, we are far from fashion gurus, but there are a few rules to go by and you won’t go far wrong:
- Dress to reflect what the interviewer is likely to be wearing – If you are going for a more creative role that is not client facing then don’t worry too much about digging your suit and tie out. If the company are usually quite smart, then you will need to follow suit (sorry again!!)
- If in doubt, go a bit smarter – If you are debating between the smart jeans or the trousers, go with the trousers.
- Good shoes are always a winner – smart and clean. Ladies I know they look good, but very high heals when you are nervous and you don’t know the office is a risky move.
- Go for something you have worn before – you will feel more comfortable and you will know that it won’t gape open when you sit down or show huge sweat rings if you are nervous. If you do want to buy something special for interview at least give it a trial beforehand.
- Accessorise – Its always a good idea to bring a copy of your CV, a pad of paper and a pen (and a hard copy of your portfolio on the creative side of things) or an ipad to showcase your work, so put all of this in a smart bag.
- One for the ladies: Not too low and not too high – pretty standard interview no, no but you really don’t want to have got the job purely on those assets do you?
- Go easy on the aftershave/perfume – clean and fresh smelling is of course a must but be careful not to squirt your best Chanel too many times before you walk in as you will just make the interviewer feel queasy.
- Most importantly – if you don’t know, ask beforehand. If via a recruiter they will know and if direct, then just a quick email to your contact will ensure you will feel more comfortable on the day.
