Very First Job:
Worked in a barber shop in Windsor, making sure the clients were offered a tea or coffee, keeping the floor clean and tidy, the equipment was clean and usable.
What did you want to ‘be when you were older’ when you were at School?
As every little kid, a footballer, but as I grew up the odds of that happening became very slim and now I am taking each opportunity as it comes along to me.
What made you want to join Scout Talent?
I had previous interviews and had been really undecided with my decisions with the other companies, until I came to Scout. I knew straight away that this company was going to be the one that’s starts off my career. Straight away I got on with Nick as we spoke a bit about Rugby and other similar hobbies. Then Rebecca arrived. She said she was interviewing someone else but my theory is she was just late and needed an excuse haha! I am happy I made the decision to start working here. Nick, Rebecca and the team are positive and always looking to go forward and progress, and this is a place where I feel I can really benefit and grow from. Although Nick on a bad day… not one to mess with!
What skills will you bring to the company?
I’m ambitious and always looking to progress, so I’ll be bringing in my tenacity to get things done. I am a go-getter and nothings going to get done if you wait for it to come to you, so I am always seeking opportunities to progress and improve my skills to benefit Scout.
How did you get the job?
I applied through .GOV/apprenticeships and found the apprentice job role here at Scout. Once I had applied, they were very quick to get back to me and I had an interview the following week. After meeting Rebecca and Nick for the first time in my first interview, including successfully passing the question “What’s 7×8” by Nick, I got a call later that day to go to a follow up interview the following week where I had to make a presentation about one local advertising company and one local marketing company. After the second interview, I walked away with a positive attitude as I felt I had done myself proud and really impressed the team. A few hours later I got a call from Rebecca offering me the role and I was over the moon and accepted.
What made you choose an Apprenticeship instead of University?
I had previously applied for a place at University but the apprenticeship route is more for me. I am able to learn and earn at the same time and gain valuable experience whilst doing so, and that is the difference for me. The opportunity to also gain a qualification is amazing. This a work hard, play hard environment and you only get out of the course what you put into it.
What has your typical day been in your first week?
I come in at 10 every morning, on Monday we go through the job lists and see what candidates and jobs are still going or no longer exist and need to be taken off. I have been getting on top of the current database which needed a deep cleanse. Taking everyone off that hasn’t had contact with any of our current staff and keeping the candidates on which would like to still keep in contact with us. Once I had completed that I then sent an email to deepen the cleanse and only keep the people that would like to stay on our database. Also helping Rebecca and Kate finding candidates on LinkedIn and on Reed search engines. I have also been boosting and getting my LinkedIn profile up to date by linking in with Candidates and Clients. Having to complete expenses sheets. Also attending a couple of meetings with candidates to gain valuable interview experience and a new Client meeting to see how new business is gained.
What do you think will be the best thing about your new job?
Being able to grow and develop my current skills and learn many more by the guidance of Nick, Rebecca and the team.
What do you think the most challenging aspect will be?
Trying to put my new skill set into place and to try and become the best I can be and then going beyond that to achieve even further.
What advice do you have for people trying to decide between University and Apprenticeship?
If you feel that your career path needs a degree to compensate what you want to do in life, then go ahead and go to University and get the degree you want. If you are unsure as to what you think your future entails then instead of staying in a full-time/part-time job and not challenging yourself, go out and get an apprenticeship as it will benefit you so much more than being comfortable in the workplace you are at now. Apprenticeships are on the up and are now competing with Universities.
Where do you see yourself in 5 year’s time?
I expect to be doing well for myself and working in an environment where my colleagues are challenging me on a day-to-day basis and still improving to be the best I can be.
