Here at Scout we like to think that we would understand the importance of employee wellbeing, we spend our day finding people that will hopefully become happy employees when they get their new job – dedicated, recognized and positive. Plus we are a pretty happy bunch in the office ourselves, so we are hopefully doing something right! So here are our top tips to help ensure wellbeing in your office:
Relationship forming:
Lets face it, most of us are in the office and with our work colleagues more than we see our families! To ensure any relationship works, it is important to spend some quality, informal and fun time together – actually get to build some memories and share more positive experiences. It doesn’t have to be cheesy and forced ‘team building exercises’ but it is surprising how well just an informal lunch out or drinks after hours will work. (The Advertising industry is very good at this, just take their lead!!) Just make sure its not all work, all of the time or the team will realize they just don’t know each other and so not care about loyalty or positivity.
Stop staring at the computer for 10 hours:
We all rely on technology of some description in our lives but with all of the roles we place here at Scout, all of them require very hefty periods of time at a computer. It is quite shocking how long you can be staring at a screen for without actually lifting your head, if you are not careful. Not only is this very likely to cause headaches and stress and therefore negativity, you will also not be interacting with your colleagues enough, so the above point will then not happen either! Take a few minutes to get up and walk about, go and catch a breath of fresh air and fill up your water bottle again – re-focus then crack on.
Healthy body, healthy mind:
OK, there is always someone who brings in the biscuits and yes it does always seem to be someone’s birthday so any excuse for a bit of cake but trying to promote a healthy lifestyle makes an enormous difference to the wellbeing of your staff. From something as simple as a free fruit bowl that is always on offer, through to offering a discounted (or free if you are feeling particularly generous) gym membership to ensure everyone is trying to remain fit and healthy. You could even go as far as offering group PT sessions for your staff like we do! Not only will this be seen as a positive benefit to working for the company but there will be less days lost to sickness and stress.
Say thanks:
Recognition of a good job done and encouraging your employee’s goals and aspirations is absolutely vital to ensuring they stay motivated. It could be as simple as a well-worded email thanking them for their effort on a particular project. You could also think about something much bigger and introduce a reward system to identify people that go the extra mile – it could be standard across all employees or tailored to different sets of people if you have very different teams across your company. If you do chose to do this though, you will need to stick to your guns as it will of course have the opposite effect if you introduce it, then never actually offer anything on a regular basis.
So, thinking cap on for that team night out, get yourself to the supermarket and buy a bulk load of fruit for everyone, and once you have read this blog, get up and walk over to your colleague and thank them for that great presentation they put together, whilst filling up their water bottle for them!
